About the Key Register

STRRules.rent is an independent publication about one job: helping readers determine and manage short-term rental rules by location and property type, without confusing a general guide with advice for a specific property.

A desk with registration papers, a map and a notebook for checking rental rules

Most rental-rule advice is published by platforms, managers or services with a booking to win. Their guides are sales pages with rules in them. This desk has nothing to sell. It reads municipal codes, official portals and primary legislation, and explains, entry by entry, what the rule says, where it applies, when it was checked, and what only the official portal can decide.

What this site is

A short-term rental regulation and host-compliance authority site. Its backbone is jurisdiction, host and property type, registration and licence, zoning and primary residence, operating limits, taxes, safety, noise and parking, platform requirements, renewals and compliance. Coverage includes registration and licensing, permits, zoning, primary-residence and owner-occupancy rules, occupancy and night limits, minimum stays, lodging and occupancy taxes, safety, noise, nuisance and parking rules, platform requirements, renewals, enforcement and penalties, and city-by-city compliance pages. It covers Airbnb and Vrbo-style rentals without being tied to any platform, and it is not affiliated with any platform.

What we are not

We are not a regulator, a licensing authority, a law firm or a directory, and nothing here is a recommendation of a platform, manager, insurer or service. We do not generate leads. No guide promises a licence, a tax outcome or a penalty-free let, and no guide advises a specific host on a specific property.

The rule about numbers

Rental content runs on borrowed figures: a cap from another city, a fee with no date, a tax rate with no jurisdiction. This site does not publish numbers it cannot stand behind. Figures quoted here come from a municipal code or official portal, are attributed, and carry the date they were checked. Worked examples use round numbers and are labelled illustrations, and fees and rates are dated snapshots, never promises.

How guides are made

Each guide is written against the sources listed at its foot, carries the date its evidence was last checked, and opens with a rule card summarising the jurisdiction and stage, the question it answers, the evidence level and the first check. If a rule changes, the affected guides change and the corrections page records it.

Preferred sources
